7 Simple Habits
to Extend Your Watch's Life by 10 Years"
Congratulations on owning your dream mechanical or quartz watch! It's much more than just a timekeeping tool; it's a reliable companion. Making this companion last longer isn't complicated. The core of watch maintenance is "pay attention daily, consult an expert when needed." Start cultivating these good habits now.
Daily Cleaning – A Gentle Wipe Prevents Problems
Watches come into contact with our skin, easily accumulating dust and sweat, which can even corrode the case or strap over time. The best method is to gently wipe your watch with a soft microfiber cloth after each use. This effectively prevents dirt buildup and keeps the watch sparkling clean. For watches with good water resistance, you can occasionally wipe them with a slightly damp cloth, but remember to dry them thoroughly and never use soap, as it may damage the waterproof gaskets.
Storage – Give It a Safe "Home"
Leaving your watch carelessly on a table or in a drawer makes it easy for it to be scratched or accidentally dropped, damaging the delicate internal parts. It's essential to take good care of storing it properly. The ideal way is to place it in a lined watch box or storage tray to prevent dust accumulation and impacts. Additionally, keep it away from strong magnetic fields (such as speakers or refrigerator doors) and direct sunlight, as these can affect timekeeping accuracy and dial color.
Water Resistance Truth – Don't Be Fooled by the Numbers
A common pitfall for beginners is overestimating a watch's water resistance. First, the accurate term is "water-resistant." Generally, 30 meters of water resistance only protects against splashes when washing hands; 50-100 meters is suitable for swimming; and 200 meters and above is for diving. Two other key points: 1) Never wear it while showering or in a sauna, as hot water and steam will accelerate the aging and failure of the waterproof gaskets; 2) Before submerging, always ensure the crown (the time-setting crown) is tightened or pushed back into place.
Movement Maintenance – Keep It Running
Mechanical watches need regular winding to maintain an even distribution of internal lubricant. For automatic mechanical watches worn daily, normal arm movements will wind them. If you don't wear it often, it's recommended to manually wind it once a week. When manually winding, it's best to remove the watch from your wrist and slowly turn the crown with your thumb and forefinger until you feel slight resistance. Never force it, as this can damage the movement.
Avoid "Dangerous Times"
This is a well-known "unwritten rule" among experienced watch enthusiasts: avoid quick-setting the date or day of the week between 9 PM and 3 AM. During this time, the calendar mechanism is automatically switching; forcibly intervening manually can easily damage the gears, causing the calendar function to malfunction and making repairs very difficult.
Stay Away from the "Invisible Killer" of Magnetization
Many things around us are invisible sources of magnetic fields, such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and magnetic clasps on bags. If a watch is magnetized, the most common symptom is that it suddenly starts running very fast. Although demagnetization is a minor service offered by repair shops, being mindful of your watch's contact with these items during daily wear is the best preventative measure.
Professional Maintenance – Don't Skimp on Time No matter how meticulous your daily maintenance, it can't replace professional servicing. Just like cars need regular visits to the 4S shop, the lubricating oil inside a watch will dry out, and the parts will wear down. The general recommendation is to take your watch to a professional repair center or brand after-sales service center for a thorough "big check-up" every 5 years (some brands extend this to 10 years). A standard service typically includes: complete disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, replacement of worn parts, reassembly and lubrication, timekeeping accuracy adjustment, and replacement of waterproof gaskets and testing for water resistance.
Diligent maintenance is not only about extending the lifespan of your watch, but also about preserving every moment it has shared with you. This aligns with Bryht Arc's belief in 'Timeless Brightness,' and what truly keeps this brilliance shining is your daily, meticulous care.
